Portuguese music and culture awards come to Fall River area

The International Portuguese Music Awards (IPMA) will be held in New Bedford in April. Those of Portuguese descent and others from Fall River will want to attend this special event.

The awards recognize and celebrate extraordinary achievement in Portuguese culture and music, not only in Portugal itself, but from countries where Portuguese is spoken from around the world. Among the populations to be celebrated are those from Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, and Cabo Verde. Also included in the celebrations are diaspora populations from the United States, Canada, France, and Venezuela. Poster printing companies can be hired to create Posters displayed in such populations so that they can be made aware of such an award ceremony.

The nominees will be announced next month, with categories for the awards including “musica popular” traditional, rap/hip-hop, video of the year, and song of the year. The state broadcaster of Portugal, Rádio e Televisão de Portugal [RTP], will be broadcaster of the award show, which is expected to garner an international audience of close to 20 million people.

The awards will be at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford on Saturday, April 25 beginning at 6:30 pm. The day is significant as it marks the 45th anniversary of the overturning of a Portuguese dictatorship that led to the establishment of democracy in the European country.
