Popular pond in Fall River undergoes renovations

An announcement was recently made that there will be a rehabilitation of the parking lot, fishing pier, and boat ramp at the Matthew J. Kuss Fishing Pier and Boat Ramp on Cook Pond in Fall River.

Senator Michael Rodrigues said that this renovation will improve the access to recreation on the waterways for residents of the community. The cost for the project will be $400,000 and is expected to be completed in the spring. Funding for the project will come from the fees for fishing and hunting licenses.

The fishing pier was dedicated in the early 1970s and was not in good condition. Now the parking lot and boat ramp as well as the fishing pier have been repaved.

The area had been previously used as a site for illegal dumping, said State Representative Alan Silvia, but there are gates around the area now and will be closed for certain hours that are still as yet to be determined. Grant money for lights and cameras is being investigated as well as the payment of fines.

Matthew Kuss Jr., a retired employee from the Fall River School Department, flew in from Miami for the announcement as he remembered when his father tried to get the ramp built 40 years ago.
