Open house dazzles visitors at Fall River Historical Society

The Historical Society of Fall River is currently hosting its annual Christmas Open House with festive Christmas trees, rooms that are beautifully decorated for the season, and the opportunity to purchase unique gifts in its museum shop.

The Society is located in a mansion of the Greek Revival-style that was built for Andrew Robeson Jr., an important businessman in the city, in 1843. Michael Martins, curator of the Museum, worked with Dennis Binette and Kathy Croan to create the Christmas display over a seven-week period.

Several trees are featured in the open house. There is an upside-down tree in the music room that tells the story of how St. Nicholas evolved to the Santa Claus of America folklore. As well as this, there is a 14-foot tree in the back parlor that uses the Victorian tradition of placing cotton batting on the branches so as to look like snow. Finally, in the dining room, the table is set for a traditional Victorian Christmas breakfast with a tree that has colorful glass ornaments.

The Society may be turning to printing companies to Print Flyers and mailers that can be distributed in the area. This will help to let people know about the open house and the other events that are scheduled for the month in order to see Christmas in.
