The For Youth Initiative has been launched by the city of Fall River, using $2m in funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.
Laura Washington, a City Councilor, proposed the program to provide scholarship opportunities to youth in Fall River who come from low-income and middle-income households. These scholarships would be used for pursuing extra-curricular activities. The funds will also support the non-profit organizations and businesses that offer these activities and endured economic hardships over the past three years.
The program will be administered by the Boys and Girls Club for the city. It will be accepting applications from those who will be providing local activities for young people, which may include the likes of dance, boxing, art, martial arts, and sports. Once the vendors have been approved, a list of them will be distributed to families in Fall River. Local Print shops can help with the creation of Brochures and Flyers to help visualize lists. Families can pick up these printed materials at the Boys and Girls Club as well. They will then be able to sign up their children for a scholarship at one of the vendors on the list.
Paul Coogan, mayor of Fall River, said that this initiative will enable children to participate in extra-curricular activities and assist non-profit organizations and small businesses.
