New commuter rail to connect Fall River with Boston

Progress is being made on the South Coast Rail of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

Boston will soon be connected with Fall River, New Bedford, and Taunton by commuter rail of the MBTA. The project will include six new passenger stations in Middleborough, East Taunton, Church Street, New Bedford, Freetown, and Fall River Depot. The two stations in Fall River and Freetown have been completed since 2022.

Wamsutta in New Bedford and Weaver’s Cove in Fall River have also been built, which are layover stations for housing crews and equipment of the MBTA, as well as to store trains when not in use.

There will also be a pedestrian bridge in New Bedford. Deputy press secretary at the MBTA, Lisa Battiston, said it is 40 percent complete. Battiston stated that work is in progress on the elevator tower and stairway, and the bridge support structures will start to be built next month.

Testing of the trains is currently underway and will continue through the spring. There will be dress rehearsal train operations and full-scale drills with trains traveling as fast as 79 miles per hour, which is full speed.

Once such projects are completed, local Print shops can be hired to create Flyers with more information about new services and their schedules.

The project is expected to be completed and operational by this summer.
