Free summer meals offered to those in need

Fall River will be offering free breakfast and lunch to children in need over the summer.

Mayor Paul Coogan said this program will be available at 13 different parks across the city from Monday through Friday. There will be 10 parks that will also have supervised activities for kids like crafts and sports, while three parks will have grab-and-go meals only. Among the 10 parks offering lunch and activities are Griffin, Lafayette, Pulaski, and Sunset Parks while Bernie Costa, Father Diaferio, and Heritage Heights Parks will have the grab-and-go options.

Meals will be handed out on a first come, first served basis from 11:45 am to 1:45 pm each day, and are free for anyone under 18 years old. From 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, the activities and games will be held. Greater Fall River Re-Creation, which offers wellness and recreation programs, is running the program while Whitsons Food Service and the school department will be preparing the meals.

Coordinator of Family and Youth Services at the Fall River Housing Authority, Joey DaSilva, said the authority is making sure that knowledge of the free meals is made known throughout the community. Banner printing can be used for informing a community about such activities and events. These free meals and activities will run until Friday, August 27.
