A weeklong celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of the battleship USS Massachusetts as a museum ship on August 14, 1965 is planned, with a series of commemorative events to highlight the essential role that the battleship played in the history of the United States.
According to Brad King, executive director of Battleship Cove in Fall River, the celebration will have a variety of activities and events that will attract people of all ages.
It begins this Friday, August 14, with the official 50th Anniversary Ceremony, where the public can watch the ceremony from a satellite location on the Battleship Cove pier. It will mark the day that Battleship Cove opened as a museum 50 years ago and will be highlighted by a 45-piece fife and drum corps with uniforms that are exact replicas of those from the First United States Infantry Regiment in the War of 1812.
Another highlight will be the 70th and final reunion of the former battleship crew-members, with a ceremony and a 21-gun salute. A group of 19 former sailors are expected to attend and the public is invited. It will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 15 aboard the battleship.
Lastly, a 50th anniversary parade will be held on Sunday, August 16 at noon to celebrate the arrival of the battleship 50 years ago ,and also to mark the end of World War II 70 years ago.
