Fall River offers book on women clothing workers

An exhibit at the Fall River Historical Society about female garment workers in the city that was turned into an online exhibit has recently been converted into a hard copy book.

The book is an oral history of these working-class women who labored in the city from 1920 to 1970. It is 400 pages in length and has over 200 illustrations. The photographs show views of Fall River as it once was, with glimpses into the old mills.

There are also pictures of 10 women both as children and young adults, along with their families that worked in those mills, in narrative format. Features of their stories include where they shopped and dinned, where they worked, and their overall experiences during that era.

Curators of the Fall River Historical Society, Joyce B. Rodrigues, Dennis Binnete, and Michael Martins, edited the book. Binnette said that the women interviewed, whose ages ranged from 85 to 100 years old and were of various nationalities, were able to make the transition from working in cotton mills to the needle trade.
