Fall River hospital to undergo new ownership

Lifespan, a healthcare provider in Rhode Island, will be purchasing Morton Hospital in Taunton and Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River.

News of such purchases and their ramifications for a region can be made known with flyer printing.

John Fernandez, CEO of Lifespan, said the properties of both hospitals will be purchased from Medical Properties and hospital licenses and operations from Steward Health Care. Fernandez expressed his excitement about this acquisition and praised the people who work at the hospitals for their dedication and service and that no one will lose their jobs in the acquisition. He said that in reality more people are needed due to nursing shortages and other issues in healthcare.

Paul Coogan, mayor of Fall River, has had many communications with Fernandez and will be meeting in person soon to discuss the hospital. Coogan said Fernandez will do whatever he can to keep Saint Anne’s in business and to improve its operations.

Executive vice president of the union that represents many employees at both hospitals, Tim Foley, expressed his pleasure with the news. He said that now everyone can look to caring for the patients and the essential work of rebuilding the hospitals.

The transition to the new owner of the hospitals is expected to take between 12 and 18 months. Fernandez said that priority will be given to the issues that need immediate attention and the determine what can be addressed over time.
