Fall River holds annual food drive

The annual holiday food drive of the Prince Henry Society was recently held at Portugalia Marketplace and Seabra Supermarket in Fall River to provide food and funds to soup kitchens and pantries in the Greater Fall River area.

Members of the Prince Henry Society collected a total of $2,610 this year, which was an increase of $810 from the food drive of 2017. A total weight of 2,095lb of food was also collected, which was 1,125lb more than last year.

Chair of the Humanitarian and Relief Committee, Joe Borges, said the group challenges itself every year to collect more food donations than the previous year, and this year the community was most helpful in achieving that goal.

Borges added that Radio Voz do Emigrante sponsored the event and host Frank Baptista was outstanding, along with the two markets where the food drive was held. Banner printing can be used for such events to make the community aware of the need for food and monetary donations for food banks and soup kitchens.

Three soup kitchens – The Holiday Fund at The Herald News, the Veterans Association, and St. Anne’s Food Pantry – each received $350 with the balance of the funds to be distributed by the Society towards needs that arise in the upcoming year.

Robert Medeiros, President of the Society, said that tax-deductible monetary donations will still be accepted throughout the year.
