Fall River goes on turkey drive

The annual distribution of turkeys by the Salvation Army was held last Thursday and Friday in Fall River.

According to Salvation Army Major Elizabeth Deming, there were about 700 turkeys handed out on Thursday and 300 more on Friday. In addition to the turkeys, those in need also received vegetables, stuffing mix, potatoes, cranberry sauce, and mixes for bread and brownies. She said more people may be coming in for turkeys up until Thanksgiving Day.

Deming was originally concerned that not enough turkeys would be collected this year due to the avian flu that affected the population of turkeys earlier in the year. However, about 1,000 turkeys were collected, which was enough for all the families who signed up for help for the holiday.

Bags of items were given out based on family size. People could pick up rolls and then at the end they were given a turkey by a volunteer.

Turkeys were not given out to individuals and these people were told about the various organizations in the city that would be providing free meals on Thanksgiving Day. These organizations might want to use the services of a local Print company to create a flyer that can be handed to these individuals informing them of where they can find these meals and the hours during which they will be offered.
