Fall River gets new way to pay for parking

New parking kiosks are coming to Fall River.

Director of the Traffic Department for the city, Laura Ferreira, said the first two are currently installed, one of which is in the public parking area directly behind the post office and the second one of which is on Sullivan Drive.

The rate for parking in downtown will increase from 50 cents an hour to $1.00. The kiosks will be able to accept bills and coins as well as credit cards. Ferreira pointed out that the convenience of these kiosks will be significant. In addition, she said that fewer $20 parking violations will be issued by the city as a result as these kiosks are so easy to use. In busy areas of the city there will be a one-hour minimum and a two-hour maximum. Less busy streets will have a maximum of one hour of parking. Such new developments in a city are often made known throughout the community with flyer printing.

In addressing the hourly fee, Ferreira said that these new rates are a good deal in comparison to rates in neighboring cities and towns. It has been 13 years since there has been a parking rate increase in the city.

Ferreira said the goal is install the 35 kiosks planned for the city by the end of the year. Each kiosk will cost $11,000.
