Fall River food pantry finds new space

The Greater Fall River Community Food Pantry, having operated for the last 33 years from the First Baptist Church on North Main Street, recently announced that it has purchased a property on Nashua Street and plans to renovate the space that was once the home to a wholesale distributor.

Director David Perry said the space is much bigger than what the pantry has now, and will work well as it is on a major bus route and people can walk to it from downtown. The pantry plans to close the sale this month and open in April. The sale will be paid from with a capital campaign that raised $100,000 and donations from other sources.

Perry said the space is about 3,700 square feet, and has two walk-in freezers. A wall will be knocked down to create a large open area, and other renovations will include interior painting and a new entrance.

The Boston Food Bank, Target, Walmart, and other organizations and businesses provide the food, and about 20 volunteers are on hand to run the pantry.

Poster printing companies can be hired to create Posters that can be displayed in key locations in the city, so that those who need food will know where they can find the new location of the pantry once it opens in the spring.
