The local chapter of the American Red Cross and the Firefighters Wives Association were recently presented Checks of $8,000 each by the United Way of Greater Fall River.
Agencies, businesses, and others donated money to help those families caught in an accident on New Year’s Day. This was a special collection in which BankFive, Fall River Deaconness Home staff and residents, the United Way of Mass Bay/Merrimack Valley, and the United Way of Greater New Bedford participated.
The head of the not-for-profit Firefighters Wives Association, Sharron Furtado, said that a total of over $100,000 has been collected, including the United Way donation. More fundraisers are scheduled and flyer printing can be used to publicize such fundraising efforts.
The executive director of the chapter of the Red Cross that oversees southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape and Islands, Hilary Greene, said that these funds were very important for the families. She added that the United Way “does so much great work” and has been a long-term supporter.
Executive Director of the United Way, Kimberly Smith, said the organization is all about helping other people, adding that it was an occasion that required assistance from the community and everyone did everything they could to help. She continued that the United Way is highly appreciative of the many donations that came from the community and its partners.
