The HealthFirst Family Care Center in the Flint area of Fall River recently acquired a brand new Ford Transit so that patients will have free transportation to and from their appointments with dentists and physicians at the facility.
According to Julie Almond, CEO of HealthFirst, having this van will eliminate the barrier to transportation that its patients have had for many years.
The van will run from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Transportation can be set up when patients make their appointments. When space allows, as the van can hold up to seven passengers and is wheelchair accessible, same-day service will also be offered.
Barry Pelland, Director of Facilities at HealthFirst, added that the van is very adaptable. There will be car seats for children and babies. The service is expected to start in July and the driver will have a cellphone so as to be able to let patients know if he is on the way or will be late, and to allow for communication with HealthFirst regarding pickups.
MassDevelopment, the economic development and finance agency of the state, provided $41,000 for the van. It cost $39,000, so the remaining funds could possibly be used to create signage and hire a local printing company to create Flyers with more information about the van and its operation.
