Fall River churches assist with beds for homeless

Various churches in Fall River are helping out the homeless in the city.

As the permanent overflow shelter operated by First Step Inn will not be open until March, three churches will be stepping in to serve as overflow shelters. The director of First Step said it has already scheduled its winter overflow and so is now relying on the churches to house the homeless.

The Union Methodist Church, Master Builder Ministries, and Calvary Temple will be offering shelters this winter, says Pastor Brian Weeks of Solomon's Porch, who is also the organizer of the churches. Thomas Mello, assistant pastor of Solomon's Porch recruits and trains volunteers for the churches. The churches provide cots in their basement for spending the night.

Weeks said the homeless need to contact First Step to get on the list. Next, they go to Christ the Rock Church where they are screened and get a hot meal, after which a bus transports them to a shelter for the night. Those requiring shelter need an identification with a photograph to show they are from the city or at least from the Fall River area.
