Fall River charter school to open new campus

Atlantis Charter School in Fall River will soon be breaking ground on its new campus that will house students in kindergarten through grade 12 and consolidate them into one location.

The school currently leases space for its lower, upper, and high schools. School officials hope to open the new campus for the 2017-2018 school year.

The property contains 66 acres of land that the school purchased from the former Quaker Fabrics about ten years ago when the company declared bankruptcy. A combination of capital fundraising and the use of binds will fund the construction of the project, which is expected to cost $40 million.

As the property is adjacent to a residential neighborhood on Dickenson Street, negotiations are currently underway regarding the primary access to the school. The school is eligible for a state grant of $100,000 to fund the infrastructure needed that would improve another street bordering the property but this would require the school to donate 5 to 10 acres of its land to Fall River for developing the requisite access roads.

The school might want to consider creating Flyers with more information on the proposed access routes to the school that it can distribute to those directly affected by them.

State Representative Carole Fiola said that the school has an excellent reputation and a history of success, and that everyone is in support of the proposed single campus.
