Ground has been broken on the “Route 79 Improvements Project” in Fall River by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
Route 79 is an elevated four-lane expressway that is set for demolition. Traffic will be rerouted on existing surface roads, which will get shared-use pathways, upgraded sidewalks, and crossroads to reconnect neighborhoods along the waterfront in the city. Such projects can take advantage of local Print shops to create Flyers and other materials offering plans and further details.
Almost 17 acres of land along the river front will be freed up by the project between the new Sen. Norton City Pier Park in the city and Brightman Street. Most of this land will be within walking distance of the new South Coast Rail Station in the city, which is currently under construction and is one block east of Route 79.
New cross streets will also be built as part of the project that will improve access between the North End neighborhood of the city and the riverfront, and will reconnect portions of the historic street grid. Local investors and economic development officials in the city hope that the project will also create opportunities for new housing on the land once occupied by the expressway.
This project, which includes demolition and improvements on surface streets, is expected to be completed by 2025.
