The Federal and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agencies (MEMA) recently awarded the city of Fall River a grant of $5,468,642 for the construction of improvements to the drainage system on Middle Street.
Terrance Sullivan, Administrator of Public Utilities, said this money will separate the combined sewer overflow system from storm water drainage and help to deal with periodic flooding on the street.
There will be new drains installed in Middle Street when work on the project begins in the spring, as well as a vegetated area in the median strip from South Main Street to Broadway and tree filter Boxes. The impact of the project on Kennedy Park will also lead to enhancements in the park.
Deputy administrator of community utilities, Paul Ferland, commented that during heavy rains that affect certain buildings in the area, such as St. Anne’s Church and St. Anne’s Hospital, the flooding that often occurs will be alleviated as a result of the project.
Kurt Schwartz, Director of MEMA, added that while the disruptive flooding in the Middle Street area over the past few years cannot be completely eliminated, the Fall River Hazard Mitigation Grant Project can go a long way to reduce the impact on people and property.
