New accessible trail opens in Andover

The Haggetts Pond Rail Trail in Andover is now open.

The trail, which is 0.6 miles long, runs from Haggetts Pond Road to a scenic overlook with majestic views of Haggetts Pond. It was built along what was once a rail bed and has been improved to provide a more accessible and welcoming experience for everyone.

It is the first trail to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act in Andover, and is a major step in expanding recreational opportunities to be more inclusive, opening one of the great outdoor resources in the community to residents of all abilities.

The pathway of the trail is made of asphalt and is eight feet wide. There is a boardwalk with a scenic view at the pond, benches, and other amenities to enhance the experience of the user. Interpretive signage will be installed later this spring.

There is a new parking area across from the trailhead on Haggetts Pond Road with accessible parking spaces. The crosswalk has a rapid flashing beacon so people can safely walk from the parking area to the trail.

Local Print shops can provide more details on such trails and their amenities and features with Flyers, Booklets, and other printed materials.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts awarded the town a grant of $500,000 last year through the MassTrails Grant Program to construct the trail. Funding was also made available through the American Rescue Plan Act.
