Pair of bands with decades-long career to join forces

Two groups that have been performing for over 100 years between them are teaming up with one another for some shows, with one set to give Orland Park residents an exciting mid-August night.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2023. Current performing members of the rock band include Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Johnny Van Zant, Michael Cartellone, Rickey Medlocke, Keith Christopher, Carol Chase, Peter Keys, and Stacy Michelle. Gary Rossington rarely goes on stage, but works with the band creatively. Songs for which Lynyrd Skynyrd is known include “Simple Man,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” “What’s Your Name,” and “Free Bird.”

ZZ Top consisted of Dusty Hill, Frank Beard, and Billy Gibbons until Hill passed away in 2021, after which Elwood Francis joined the band. Known for the iconic beards Hill and Gibbons sported, the band formed in 1969. A few of the iconic ZZ Top tunes are “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Just Got Paid,” and “Chartreuse.”
