Summer reading soon underway in Deerfield

Over the next few months, the Deerfield Public Library will host the summer reading program.

Reading by Design is the theme this year and many schools are signing up to help. The program is meant to motivate students to read during their summer vacation, and will take place at 920 Waukegan Road starting.

There will be programs for every age from infant to twelfth grade, and outreach coordinator Judy Hoffman has said there will also be reading for adults. Students can earn prizes and the school, with the most kids in the program receiving the DPL Cup. Walden Elementary School won the cup last year and, according to the library information specialist, the students are ready to win it again.

Reading by Design focuses on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) topics since there are plans to incorporate reading into those subjects and it gives students the chance to be creative.

Putting together the program was a group effort. A student at Deerfield High School made the logo while a teacher at Shepard Middle School had students promote it through their own art. A social studies class created Post-It note art to put outside. Finally, school district librarians conducted their own promoting as well.

With the program running June 10 to August 6, a Print company could help by creating Banners, worksheets, paper awards, stickers, and other items students can earn as they read.
