Highland Park businesses in the Ravinia area, which is located outside of Deerfield, are gathering used musical instruments for children of lower income families. Instruments donated will be restored and used for music educational programs.
The Reach *Teach* Play is an educational effort by the Ravinia Festival, of which the Recycled Instrument Drive is a part. A total of 75,000 individuals are able to learn about music because of it. The program was first called El Sistema and served Austin in Chicago. The current recycle program allows additional Lake County areas like Waukegan access to the program.
Residents can go to one of the 15 Ravinia District businesses participating in the campaign to donate instruments, including Piero's Pizza, Full Circle Architects, SoShee Boutique, Jeff Cohen Photography, and Highland Park Bank & Trust. There will be a green flyer the window of participating Ravinia Business District businesses. Many businesses in the district are musically inclined, such as Madam Zuzu's, which has live music. There are several instrument and instrument repair stores involved too.
