Pizza Bowl earns a crust for educational projects

District 113 held its annual Pizza Bowl for the third year at Deerfield High School on January 25.

The event brought the community together for the benefit of education. Seven pizzerias and 10 bakeries made food for residents to judge by category.

Harriet Rosenthal, mayor of Deerfield, commented that her stomach was full and the event makes everyone feel like neighbors. The Baker's Cup, which is the award for the best baked goods, went to Highland Park business Baker Boys and its cupcakes. Lou Malnati's won the award for the best pizza in the area, taking the crown from Viccino's, which had won the title two years running.

George Fornero, the superintendent of District 113 schools, stated that he was proud of the students from different high schools who worked together despite their basketball game against each other two days prior, when Deerfield beat Highland Park..

The District 113 Education Foundation started the Pizza Bowl three years ago to raise funds for projects in the district. A past grant made it possible for a literature class to include a chat with a required reading book author online.

Volunteering printing services for educational fundraisers such as the Pizza Bowl promotes a company as generous and worthy of business. A printing company could make shirts to commemorate the event.
