On June 25, Japanese firm Takeda Pharmaceuticals announced to staff that it will be vacating its headquarters in Deerfield before next year.
The company hopes to move the 1,000 employees left on the site, which totals 777,000 square feet, and to close its sale by Spring 2020.
In September, the firm disclosed its plans to close the campus and move an unconfirmed number of employees. The reason for the relocation was to better teamwork within the company and make operations in the United States easier.
The company is over two and a half centuries old and has a history of 40 years in the state. Earlier this year, it acquired Shire, a pharmaceutical company based in Dublin with headquarters near Boston, for over $62bn. Takeda is centralizing its operations in the country in Massachusetts.
According to Julia Ellwanger, spokesperson for Takeda, employees will work either in a temporary location or remotely. The temporary spot will be in Bannockburn, where Shire's offices used to be. Ellwanger did not disclose how long employees will be there, nor how many will move to the location. It depends on the needs of both the company and its employees, and the company is also considering those of its staff who are living in Deerfield.
