Deerfield resident Christopher Kearney, a Loyola Boys Academy senior on the swim team, placed fifth in the recent Illinois annual swim meet 100-yard freestyle.
This is the second season Kearney has made it to the consolation finals. He reached a personal best of 45.91 seconds in the 100-yard swim at the Evanston event on February 26.
The next day, he swam the distance in 46.25, securing his fifth place medal. Kearney swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41:03 for third place, which is approximately how well he did in the previous season. He has won seven medals as a swimmer in total.
Kearney said he did not focus on placing during the second swim because it would be his last for the academy. Instead, it was a time for enjoying himself in the water and he was satisfied with it.
Mike Henglemann, the swimming coach at Loyola, believes Kearney's better stroke rate lead to his personal best, and that he has taken advantage of his strength to increase his speed. Kearney agreed, saying strength rather than a change in technique, lead to his success. He will be moving on to Miami, Ohio after graduation.
