On January 9, Deerfield opened the doors to the permanent location of its Hellenic American Academy branch.
School board president Chrysso Sarris explained that the school uses the language and culture of Greece to teach their students. Similar schools were founded in 1907 in the Greek Town area in Chicago, and many more locations have opened over the years. The school opened a branch in Deerfield a decade ago and rented property on Lake Cook Road until now. Last year, the Foundation for Hellenic Education and Culture bought property on Pine Street.
Spokesman Constantine Kanellos stated that the school has now moved to the new building. Having more space has given the school the opportunity for more programs such as a dance studio, a multi-purpose room, an athletic field, and a bigger playground.
A plan commission memorandum addressed to the mayor and the board of trustees said Deerfield public school Cadwell School were the first residents of the building. Children's creative center Starland was the last occupant before the foundation and academy moved in. Head of schools Voula Sellountos believes around 320 students attend Hellenic American Academy; the day school makes up 115 of the students. The rest come after school or during the weekend for Greek lessons. High school students also come in during the weekend.
