Recipients of the two 2014 Gryziecki College/Post-Secondary Scholarships have been named by the Deerfield Park Foundation.
The scholarship, which began three years ago, was originally a competition for graduates of high school and current college students. The Deerfield Whole Foods Market was able to raise over $3,000 and make the scholarship available for both categories.
Erin Kaster won the high school senior scholarship. Since 2012, she been part of Deerfield Park District's Sun 'n' Fun camp. Not only is she a Future Business Leaders of America member, but she also co-captains a team for the cancer research charity Relay for Life.
The winner of the scholarship for a college student within their first three years was Nichole Beckman, a swim instructor and six-year employee of Deerfield Park District, starting as the camp counselor for ages 4-12. This year, she will be the Sun 'n' Fun Camp's co-director. She was able to gather over 80 people to participate in the June Safety Town program.
The two students will receive their awards on Monday, July 21, at 7:00 pm during the foundation's board meeting in the Jewett Park Community Center. Both young women are studying Child Psychology.
Summer camps like Sun 'n' Fun often make shirts for their campers and counselors. Using a local printing company would save on shipping and may help to generate sponsors for camp events.
