Officials have disclosed that the neighboring towns of Deerfield, Highland Park and Lake Forest are starting a two-month construction project at their border.
Repairs on the water mains west of Fort Sheridan near Timber Lane and Old Elm Road will start on Monday, June 10 and are expected to finish on August 31. In May, the city council for Lake Forest accepted a contract totaling almost $1.55m with Bolder Contractors. During construction, a part of Old Elm Road between Sheridan Road and Green Bay Road is closed. Commuters will have to use Green Bay Road out to Sheridan and Westleigh Roads.
A study carried out in November 2014 labeled repairing the water main as the second most important project having to do with storm water drainage. The same study found that the current storm drain system could handle a storm event statistically probable every five years. However, the sewer must be able to handle the kind of storm likely every 10 years according to county regulations.
Enlarging the storm sewer running beside Old Elm Road would lower the amount of flooding at Forest Hill Road. Part of the yearly capital improvement plan for Lake Forest already included replacing the water main, but not expanding the storm sewer. The city decided to start both projects together in order to complete them more efficiently and lower the levels of inconvenience for the community.
