On February 16, Highland Park and Deerfield High School students played a version of basketball in Deerfield.
The final score was 46-44 with Deerfield as the winner, but the points did not matter to either team - it was all for fun and enjoyment, says Liz Martin, the coach for nearby Highland Park.
Bea Wagener and Kelsey Kuhn sponsor Warrior Buddies, which helps establish student relationships as a club. According to Wagener, the version played is called buddy basketball and each team member needs a partner to play. Their partner may need extra help on the court such as pushing a wheelchair, help playing by the rules, or motivation.
There were two hula-hoops at each side of the court, which counted as a simple basket. A hoop at a lower height was for players in wheelchairs and counted for two points as a layup.
Senior Ryan Cohen of Deerfield learned how to take care of friends from one of the partners when he allowed another teammate a chance at a basket. Another Warrior shook the hands of the Highland Park Giants after the game while they prepared to get onto the bus to go home. Several players praised the game for being fun and helping the students make friends and help others.
