Two Deerfield schools have received the National Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence.
Last Thursday, September 28, the United States Department of Education disclosed 25 schools in the state that achieved the award. Started in 1982, the award is given to schools that minimize differences in academic achievement between students or excel at student learning. The winners are determined by state and nation standardized tests.
Each year, there can be 420 nominations from the United States, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Bureau of Indian Education, and the Department of Defense Education Activity. Private schools are eligible too but a private education council nominates them.
This year, 342 schools around the country earned the award, among which were Deerfield schools Kipling Elementary and Charles J Caruso Middle. For the latter, it marks its first receipt of the award for 34 years, which it achieved under a different name.
Mike Lubelfeld, superintendent of schools, described how gracious and honored he is that the school's efforts paid off. He thanked staff and students for being open to new ideas so the district schools can be at their best.
Many schools make Banners when they win National Blue Ribbon status to display outside where everyone can see it, showcasing what makes them one of the few hundred schools in the country to receive such an award.
