Last week, Elyse Emerzian of Deerfield took first place in the Junior Girls' Amateur Championship of Illinois.
Her score was 144 over two days on the orange course at the University of Illinois. In the first round, which took place on August 1, she scored under 70 and was the only participant to do so.
Emerzian believes she she was getting ahead of herself, and that this is why she did not achieve all of her goals for the season. Therefore, she concentrated on her keeping her mind in the game and focusing on each stroke in order to get in the right mindset. Stress levels were high during the tournament, as she won by one stroke at the final hole.
According to Emerzian, 40 people watched her sink the final par-3 hole, including coaches from universities and participants who had finished the course. Her hope is that her win will allow her to qualify for the IHSA title for the state in autumn, and then continue her golfing career at a university. She is unsure which institution she will attend at this stage, but her coach believes she will do well.
