Sean Scarry from Deerfield came in second place in the Illinois championship meet for swimming and diving the last weekend in February.
Scarry collected 476.45 points, which was just enough to outdo his third place competition. John Sullivan, coach of the Deerfield team, stated that he could not tell where Scarry had placed until the judges announced it.
During the preliminaries, Scarry took third place, admitting that he did not feel it was his best performance. The next and final day of the meet, he got off to a rough start but caught up in the last three dives. Sullivan was proud that he succeeded despite the pressure on him, and Scarry's improvements have aided him in coaching other diving teammates like Heath Ogawa, who came in 13th.
The week prior, the school surpassed four swimming records and two swimmers made it to the state level. Juniors Ryan Smith and Evan Fischoff, sophomore Scott Stern, and senior Kellen Scanlan came in third place during the relay. They came in 24th at state. Sullivan said that the past few weeks have been positive for the whole team, with a number of previous personal records being smashed.
