The Deerfield baseball team ended last month with a win against Glenbrook North thanks to Brad Pineless' center field hit to bring home one batter.
Pineless allowed a fastball to pass him for a strike, commenting that he was not comfortable with the ball's position. Noah Stern, pitcher for Glenbrook North, was not being consistent with his throws and Pineless was permitted to let the fastball slide.
This was Pineless' first varsity walk-off, and his teammates showed their appreciation after the game. Glenbrook North has been a challenging opponent for Deerfield and they considered the win a major triumph, especially since had been undefeated in the conference until three days before when Deerfield had another win over them. That game moved Deerfield's division rank up and gave them a chance to reach first place.
Kevin Marsh, the coach of the Deerfield team, said the wins could spell a change for the better. He hopes the team keeps up the momentum and keeps their eyes on the prize. Pitcher for Deerfield Ryan Pfutzenreuter concurs. He believes defense and pitching will be the key to their success and that fans will be impressed by their performance.
If they win the division, the coach or a parent of a player may want to get a banner for the team to celebrate, saying “Congratulations Deerfield” with a baseball motif.
