Afterschool cooking series to inspire chefs-in-training

In January, Guidepost Montessori at Deerbrook will host Winter Session Cooking Series for Deerfield kids ages three to six.

Guidepost Montessori at Deerbrook is a private school in Deerfield that emphasizes joyful learning through exploration and creativity. The eight-part series will occur after regular school and will introduce children to the fundamentals of cooking in a fun and entertaining way.

A professional chef will lead the class and monitor the children, but it will be the kid students who be doing most of the prepping and cooking.

Three major themes will be introduced and incorporated into the class series. The first will be the FUN-da-mentals, which will help children grow comfortable and confident in the kitchen by teaching them how to measure, mix, blend, mash, and other everyday techniques. The second theme will be Kitchen Tools PhD, which will introduce the students to mincing, dicing, chopping, and grading by using everything from kid-safe knives to immersion blenders. The third theme will be COOL-inary Confidence, which will teach kids to freestyle recipes and get creative with ingredients.

Afterschool programs like this often incorporate fun Banners in the learning space, with which Print shops specializing in banner printing can help.

The Deerfield Winter Session Cooking Series will begin January 11 and run through March 1. Guidepost Montessori at Deerbrook is located on 1085 Lake Cook Road. Tuition is $160.
