One of the most popular ballets ever written will soon be performed in Coeur d’Alene.
The World Ballet Company will dance “Swan Lake” at the Boswell Hall at Schuler Performing Arts Center, giving audiences a glimpse into a world of magic, beauty, love, and betrayal.
Tchaikovsky’s work concerns a prince who hunts a swan and is astounded when she transforms into a beautiful young woman. She and her companions are under a curse, which he vows to break; however, he is tricked into betraying her by the sorcerer who first cursed her.
Much of the music will be familiar to audiences, as it has been used in other projects. The “Swan Theme” backs the opening credits of the 1931 film version of “Dracula,” and Miss Piggy danced with Rudolph Nureyev to the music on an episode of “The Muppets.”
Sasha Gorskaya, who is from Belarus, and Gulya Hartwick, a native of Latvia, founded the World Ballet Company in 2015. The organization is based in Los Angeles, and its mission is to bring ballet performances to smaller cities and locations where this artform is rarely seen. They often modify the performances slightly to increase their appeal to contemporary audiences, and they have recently added a live orchestra to accompany them.
The World Ballet Company will be in Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday, November 10. Performances like this benefit from the publicity they receive when organizers use poster printing to support them.
