Next week will see The Georgia Association of School Nurses (GASN) arrive in town for the 20th Annual Conference. Taking place next week, between July 9 – 12, the event at the Dolce Atlanta Hotel is set to focus on increasing the wellness of school staff and students.
The Statewide Education Conference is this year titled "Let's Get Physical – Mind, Body, Spirit." A core discussion at the conference will be the growing obesity rates of American children. The country has seen nearly a third of all kids now classed as overweight or obese in the last three decades.
With the First Lady, Michelle Obama, taking up the challenge, the GASN is eager to empower its nurses to help on the front line and in the schools of the state. With more than 300,000 kids in Georgia not having health insurance, the importance of school nurses in Peachtree City and throughout is clear,
The keynote speech by Christi Kay, an executive director of a not for profit organization promoting health values, is likely to be much listened to. There are also a number of breakout sessions, focusing on fitness in schools and the links between bullying and being overweight.
These sessions will allow all nurses attending to pool their knowledge, share stories and practices, and increase their own networks. Attendees may need to carry out new business card printing as a result.
The event will also see the presentation of the Nurse of the Year Awards and School Nurse Hero Award, with the winners of these to be announced towards the close of the day on July 11.
