The 54-74 intersection, which has over 45,000 vehicles passing through it a day, has also become the route of choice for many traveling from Peachtree City and beyond to some of the more flourishing areas of metro Atlanta. The state’s Department of Transportation believes that a seldom used left turn intersection placed first before the main intersection will result traffic moving through the intersection more smoothly and without the current back up.
Local Print shops can provide a wide range of signage for all sorts of situations.
It may be difficult to envision; however, a special left turn intersection would be constructed prior to the main intersection where drivers wishing to turn left would be routed to a dedicated lane located on the other side of the road.
Daniel Trevorrow, GDOT District Traffic Engineer, told Channel 2’s Michael Doudna on WSB Tonight at 11:
“You cut down on what we call signal phases, so everyone gets more green time, and you can pump more people through that intersection.”
According to Trevorrow a displaced lane could result in a 10 percent improvement in morning traffic and a 30 percent improvement during evening rush hour.
Only two other intersections in the state have a displaced left turn lane, Peachtree City would be the third.
