Placing in at third in the pedigree category, it was a question of a dog's life for Yoda, the Xoloitzcuintle. Yoda's owner, Katherine Kobliner, seemed ecstatic by the result as she leapt in the air to mark the announcement.
Taking the overall title of the World's Ugliest Dog was a dog from North Carolina named Peanut. Badly burned as a pup, Peanut is said to have an energetic and sweet personality despite his injuries leaving him with badly bulging eyes and protruding teeth.
Explaining how Peanut has featured on poster printing campaigns to raise awareness of animal abuse, Ms. Chandler said she will continue with this, explaining:
"We're trying to use him as a poster child for what can happen to animals who are abused."
Ms Chandler said she will use the $1,500 competition prize winnings to help other pet owners who cannot afford veterinary bills.
It is the 36th running of the event, which this year was held in California at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma.
Voted on by a panel of three judges, there are a number of categories in the competition, including a dog's natural ugliness.
