Peachtree City fungi foragers invited to area hike

Fungi are all around, but many never notice them unless they see a toadstool, mushroom, or another one of their fruiting bodies. A Peachtree City event will scratch a little deeper.

Guest instructor and “fungi-phile” Daniel Rhiner will be leading a foraging expedition into the woods at NatureLink, LLC. to hunt for toadstools, mushrooms and other members of the mycological family. Along the way, they will learn about the complex and interdependent mycorrhizal (fungus to plant) associations they form that are essential for the survival of both species.

The participants in this activity will learn about the basics of mushroom foraging, including etiquette and technique. They will discover the many roles fungi play in their ecosystem, and the diverse group of species that call the area home. The excursion is expected to last for approximately four hours, and those who register are reminded to bring lots of bottled water and a bagged lunch.

It was noted that hike will be held rain or shine, and the fee to participate is $25. Field guides that focus on local fungi species can be helpful learning tools, and they can be prepared for an event like this by a printing services company.

The group will be heading into the woods on Saturday, June 15. The fee to participate is $25.
