Georgia’s Department of Driver Services is now issuing driver’s licenses with a more secure design.
Georgia’s new cards include a modern design and feature the most secure design for credentials that Georgia has ever produced. Residents of Georgia in towns such as Newnan can pick up their new licenses from one of 67 Customer Service Centers across the state.
The newly designed cards are printed on polycarbonate plastic, which makes them harder to forge. They also use black and white photos instead of color and the images are engraved with lasers. According to the DDS, this makes them almost completely tamper-proof.
Georgia’s symbolic peach will also be included in the cards’ outline to make them harder to forge. Cards for people under the age of 21 will still have an entirely different graphic design, in their current vertical orientation, which makes them easy to identify.
Old ID cards and licenses will remain valid until their original expiration dates. When they need to be renewed, the owners will be issued with cards which feature the new design whether they are collected in person or ordered through the DDS 2 GO app. If ordered online or through the app, the cards will take about 30 days to arrive in the mail.
Temporary licenses will be issued to those waiting for their proper cards to be prepared. The temporary cards will have barcodes and photographs on them.
