Hit-making band to rock Newnan

The Nixon Centre For the Arts in Newnan is hosting a performance by Gary Lewis And The Playboys this May.

Gary Lewis, the son of comedic actor Jerry Lewis, formed his band in Pasadena as a teenager while he was attending theatre arts college in the early 1960s. They performed locally, initially calling themselves Gary and The Playboys, to see if they could make it on their own, without a famous name carrying them to success.

The band landed a regular gig at Disneyland, and from there, gained the attention of producer Snuff Garret, who gave them a shot on the charts with a recording deal.

Then in the mid-1960s, the band had an explosive run of hits, including their debut, “This Diamond Ring,” which went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts. They held their own amid the era of the British Invasion, going toe-to-toe with the likes of The Beatles and company, with major hits like “Everybody Loves a Clown,” “Save Your Heart for Me” and “Count Me In,” selling millions of Copies along the way.

Lewis has maintained a presence on stage ever since, creating new lineups of the band over the years and going on tours.

Musical events like this may choose to use printing services to create music sheets and program Flyers.

Gary Lewis and The Playboys is performing on May 7 at 7 pm at The Nixon Centre For the Arts at 1523 Lower Fayetteville Rd in Newnan.
