Authority decomissions Publix's sewer system

The decentralized sewerage handling system that used to serve the Publix shopping center has been removed.

The Publix shopping center is located at Thomas Crossroads. Its decentralized sewer system had been used by Publix since the complex was constructed. The system was referred to as “decentralized” because it worked like an advanced septic system with a few more steps.

The Coweta Water and Sewerage Authority only recently connected the shopping center to the county’s public sewer line. The authority was also in charge of managing the decentralized system that was used before. Now that the system is no longer needed, it has been removed and that means there could be an empty and useable plot of land next to the shopping center. It is conveniently located between a Dollar General and a strip center. Poster printing is sometimes used to let the public know about a change of use on a plot of land.

The decentralized sewer system was made up of four “bio clear” tanks with 15 feet of depth. There are also a few large settling tanks a couple of monitoring wells that will have to be disposed of. Officials believe that there will be plenty of work to do before the plot can be built on.

Newnan Utilities is now in charge of the system after taking over from the water and sewerage authority.
