Health officials are now calling it Phase 1A+. This group consists of people older than 65, law enforcement personnel, and first responders. Drive-thru clinics in numerous places across DeKalb, such as Decatur, have experienced incredible demand for the vaccine. The BrandsMart USA site was used as a testing center but now it is serving as a full-time drive-thru clinic for vaccinations. Public health websites where people book their vaccinations are finding their limited number of vaccines are being snapped up the moment the link for booking becomes available. Some websites are even crashing because of the excess traffic.
Eric Nickens from the DeKalb County of Public Health said:
“We know everyone wants the vaccine, but we plead with you for your patience. It’s still in limited supply, and we’re only going to open up more appointments once we determine we have more vaccine in place to be able to give shots.”
DeKalb started taking bookings at noon. By 10:00 pm the same day, it received over 13,000 registrations and officials were forced to pause the registration process. Nickens said that the county only had 8,500 doses to hand out. More doses are expected to arrive soon, but no date has been given.
