Dash at Dawn returns to Decatur

An annual community race will return to Decatur this May, bringing runners, families, and supporters together for a morning of fitness and fundraising.

The event includes a 5K run and walk, as well as a shorter one-kilometer fun run, offering opportunities for seasoned runners and younger participants alike. Student divisions are also available for children ages 12 and younger, allowing them to take part in either distance. Organizers note that the course is officially certified and professionally timed, with results contributing to qualification standards for larger regional races.

Proceeds from the event support the International Community School, an institution focused on educating a diverse student population that includes immigrant, refugee, and local families. The race was created in honor of a longtime educator whose approach to athletics emphasized unity, and accessibility – values that continue to shape the event’s mission.

Participants who register by this Saturday, April 17 receive a commemorative T-shirt. With many community events, hosts use banner printing to highlight sponsors and mark finish and start locations.

Registration fees are set at $35 for the 5K run or walk, and $20 for the 1K fun run. Student entries for ages 12 and younger are priced at $35 for the 5K and $20 for the 1K.

The event will take place Saturday, May 9, beginning at 8:00 am for the 5K and 9:20 am for the 1K. The start location will be at 2418 Wood Trail Lane.
