Recruits and staff from the Gwinnett County police academy recently completed painting a house for a woman in Lawrenceville as part of a community service project.
The recruits of the 95th academy worked under the supervision of their class coordinator, Corporal Frederick Saldana. According to Saldana, he thought that doing a class community project would be a good way to show the recruits that the career on which they are about to embark is about giving and service to the community.
The recruits selected A Brush with Kindness, which is part of Habitat for Humanity in Gwinnett County, as their project and were assigned the task of painting the home that was owned by a single mother in Lawrenceville.
Several academy staffers and some of their families joined the recruits. Materials and paint were donated by Habitat for Humanity for painting the trim and exterior of the home. Breakfast was donated by the Chick-fil-A in nearby Snellville and Butch Ayers, who is Police Chief of Gwinnett County, visited with the staff and recruits.
Corporal Michelle Pihera, a spokesperson for the police, added that this project demonstrates to the recruits that the police department gives back to the community in many ways.
The police academy and the recruits who graduate on Thursday, August 25 might benefit from the assistance of a local printing company to publicize this particular project throughout the community by means of Posters and Banners.
