The Snellville Recycling Center has entered into an agreement with American Kidney Services (AKS), which will a permanent collection for the charity at the Briscoe Park site.
The AKS deal replaces the one that was in place with the Goodwill charity. It will see a truck located at the recycling center that will collect people's unwanted clothes and any so-called ‘hard goods’ they are willing to donate. The truck will be open for donations from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with poster printing likely to advertise the drive.
The VP and director of AKS, Ed Zito, explained the move, which has been driven partly by people's increasing reliance on cell phones over landlines. He said:
“Our list for free pickups is getting smaller every month. This caused us to seek new ways to collect used clothing so we can continue to raise millions of dollars to help kidney patients with their financial needs.”
Zito went on to say that the AKS program is also good for the environment, being responsible for recycling 120,000lb of clothes, 10,000lb of shoes, and 5,000lb of metals in a week.
The deal has also benefited the recycling centre. Under the agreement, an annual revenue of at least $10,000 should be realised. This is at least $900 per month more than the Goodwill agreement, according to Public Works Director Gaye Johnson.
