The end of summer is approaching, which means hundreds of children will be returning to school. More kids will be on the roads during rush hours and drivers will have to be extra vigilant when driving through school districts.
The need to be careful is especially great in locations with new schools. For example, a new school was opened on the corner of S. Columbia Drive and Talley Street in Decatur and more than 700 students are expected to be schooling there. Street lights are yet to be installed on the corner so local parent Gonzalez-Rouse enlisted printing services and posted Signs on the corner to remind drivers to slow down. She noted:
“People who are in cars and driving, please be aware of all the pedestrians and bicyclists who are moving around as well, and not just your car on the road, especially if you are in a school zone or in a neighborhood full of kids.”
Police officers have joined in on the effort to keep drivers from speeding through new school districts. They are educating drivers on the importance of obeying the newly installed stop signs and issuing citations to those who ignore them.
In Decatur’s City Schools alone, there are close to 6,000 students enrolled. Many of those children walk or ride their bikes to school because they live nearby which puts them at high risk of being involved in traffic accidents.
