Gwinnett Technical College, located in Lawrenceville just a short distance from Snellville, recently announced that it will be offering pilot classes from for the first semester of the Georgia Film Academy in Atlanta.
In a partnership with the Technical College System of Georgia and the University System of Georgia, the Georgia Film Academy is a two-course certification program that trains people for jobs in the film industry. The industry is expecting a great deal of growth in the next three to five years, with the average salary for the on-set jobs at $84,000.
According to Jeffrey Stepakoff, executive director of the Georgia Film Academy, there is a need for on-set film workers, but even jobs at the entry level require certain specific skills. The certification at the Georgia Film Academy enables students to get an edge on employment.
Glen Cannon, President of Gwinnett Tech, said that the college appreciates that it is the first technical college to be able to work with the Academy on this new program. The school has been working with the Academy for about a year to offer the program.
The College and the Academy may also be working on Promotional Products and materials that can be sent out to students and families in the area, making them aware of this new collaboration and career opportunity.
