Many essential items are becoming difficult to find on store shelves as the COVID-19 pandemic slows down the world’s economy. Hand sanitizer is an especially important item that becoming hard to find, prompting a response from locally based Legacy Compounding
The FDA has changed some of its rules to allow companies to compound certain sanitizer products that are alcohol-based. Legacy is taking advantage of this policy change.
Tyler Sharpe, who is a Lab Manager at Legacy Compounding, said:
“Compounding is customized medications. You take the chemicals and you take all the different ingredients and make a medication, most of the time, because it’s something that’s not mass-produced. People are unable to get this.”
The idea to compound the ingredients for hand sanitizer came from Legacy’s owners. The company wanted to come up with a way to help people cope with the pandemic and they felt Legacy Compounding was in a unique position to do so. The mixer at Legacy’s pharmacy is able to produce sanitizer at a rate of up to three gallons per batch. According to Sharpe, the sanitizer Legacy produced has been donated to the Decatur-Morgan Hospital, the Decatur Fire and Police Departments, as well as other clinics around the area.
